When to buy a coffee machine for less (and which type costs least to run)

The best time to buy a coffee machine is usually Black Friday (Friday 27 November 2026) and Cyber Monday, followed by the January sales and, to a lesser extent, spring and summer events (Father's Day, Prime Day, summer sales). Right before Christmas, demand is high and prices often climb back. But a machine's real cost also depends on the coffee you'll buy for years: choosing the right type matters as much as choosing the right moment.

Best time of year to buy a coffee machine

These patterns are qualitative and vary by brand and retailer, here based on France and much of Europe. A specific model can drop at another time.

The rule of thumb: the more coffee you drink, the faster a higher purchase price pays for itself through a lower cost per cup.

Consider last year's model

Brands regularly refresh their bean-to-cup and espresso ranges, and the outgoing model is often cleared when its successor arrives. Differences between generations are frequently limited to the display, the app or the number of preset drinks. If the brewing unit, grinder and milk system are the same, the previous model is often the better value, and its spare parts and accessories are usually easy to find.

Total cost of ownership: a worked example

Hypothetical example, with made-up prices you should replace with your own: a household drinks 2 coffees a day, or 730 cups a year. We compare a pod machine at €80 (€0.40 per cup), a bean-to-cup machine at €450 (€0.15 per cup with beans) and a manual espresso machine plus grinder at €350 (€0.15 per cup).

In this example, the bean-to-cup machine catches up with the pod machine after just over two years, then gets cheaper every year. Add maintenance (descaler, water filters, cleaning tablets) and your real consumption: at one coffee a day, the gap shrinks considerably.

The practical takeaway: the price of coffee matters as much as the price of the machine. Watching the price of your usual pods or beans too, and stocking up when they drop, often saves more over time than a one-off discount on the machine.

Black Friday coffee machine deals: the traps

• Inflated "was" prices: a "recommended retail price" almost nobody charges, used to show a big discount.
• "Free coffee" bundles: useful if you drink that coffee, but value it at its real price, not the advertised one.
• Cashback offers: common with brands, but they involve paperwork and delays. Read the terms before counting them in the price.
• Near-identical listings: the same model in different colours or accessory packs, at different prices.

What to look for in a coffee machine

• Pressure and heating system: for espresso, temperature stability matters more than the advertised bar figure.
• Steam wand or automatic milk system: essential if you like cappuccinos, but it needs frequent cleaning.
• Grinder settings: grind size, dose, and whether you can also use pre-ground coffee.
• Maintenance: removable brew unit or not, descaling frequency, water filter.

1. Estimate your real consumption (cups per day, milk drinks or not).

3. Shortlist two or three models and check the cost and availability of consumables.
4. Note their prices several weeks before Black Friday or the sales.
5. Value bundles and cashback offers at their true worth.
6. Compare the actual seller, the warranty and the return terms.
