Christmas 2026: when to buy gifts for less, the October to December calendar

Updated : · 5 min read

The most effective way to buy Christmas gifts for less in 2026 is to build your list in October, watch prices through the autumn and aim for the big sales moments: Amazon's October Prime event, Singles Day on November 11, Black Friday on Friday November 27 and Cyber Monday on Monday November 30. Waiting until mid-December, on the other hand, exposes you to stock-outs, express delivery fees and rushed decisions.

This guide, written for shoppers buying from French and European online stores, walks through the calendar, the return rules to know when buying early, and a method to track a whole gift list without spending your evenings on it.

When should you buy Christmas gifts to pay less?

There is no magic day that works for every product. But one pattern often holds: prices are easiest to compare from late October to early December, when promotions follow one another and stock is still plentiful. The closer Christmas gets, the more "delivered on time" outweighs price.

The right strategy fits in one sentence: know what each gift usually costs before the promotions start, so you recognise a genuine drop when it comes, whatever the date.

We have a detailed guide for each event: Prime Big Deal Days 2026, Singles Day 2026, Black Friday 2026 and Cyber Monday 2026.

Black Friday or December: should you wait to buy gifts?

For most "classic" gifts (tech, small appliances, books, video games, beauty), Black Friday generally brings the largest number of offers of the season. Not all of them are real drops, though: some prices creep up in the preceding weeks to show a flattering discount later.

The law helps a little: in France, since May 28, 2022, a struck-through price must be the lowest price the seller charged in the 30 days before the reduction (article L112-1-1 of the Consumer Code, based on the EU Omnibus directive). A price hike made more than 30 days earlier is still possible, and some sites show a "recommended price" instead. See our guides to the 30-day rule and fake Black Friday deals.

In December, promotions do not disappear, but the logic shifts: the most wanted products can become scarce, and your choice narrows to whatever can still be delivered in time.

Christmas toys: how do prices move?

Toys follow their own rhythm, which should be described with care because it varies a lot from one item to another:

  • in the autumn, the year's new toys hit the shelves and are rarely discounted straight away;
  • around the October events and Black Friday, toys are often among the featured categories;
  • in December, the most popular toys can sell out at major retailers, and the remaining offers, sometimes from third-party marketplace sellers, are then pricier;
  • after Christmas, some toys are marked down, but that is too late for December 25.

The practical takeaway: for the specific toy a child asked for, do not wait until the last minute. Set a reasonable price and buy as soon as it is reached.

Buying early: what about return windows?

This is the main objection to buying early: "what if they don't like it?". A few pointers:

  • The legal withdrawal period for an online purchase from a business in the EU is 14 days, generally from receipt of the goods. A gift bought in early November can therefore fall outside that window before Christmas.
  • Some retailers extend returns for the holidays. For example, in 2025 Amazon.fr stated that items bought between November 1 and December 31, 2025 could be returned until January 31, 2026, subject to its eligibility rules. The 2026 terms had not been published at the time of writing, so check each retailer's policy before you buy.
  • In store, exchanging or refunding a non-faulty product is up to the retailer's own policy: ask for a gift receipt and read the terms.
  • Legal guarantees (including the two-year guarantee of conformity) apply anyway, discounted or not.

What is the last day to order before Christmas?

There is no single date: it depends on the retailer, the seller (the store itself or a third party), the delivery method and your address. Some sites show a marker directly on product pages; Amazon.fr, for instance, highlighted a "Delivered before Christmas" badge on eligible items in 2025.

Two precautions apply everywhere:

  • for a product shipped from abroad, allow a much wider margin;
  • do not count on last-minute express delivery to "save" a deal: the fee can wipe out the discount.

A method to track your gift list

  1. List gifts by person, with the exact reference (model, size, colour, recommended age) and a budget.
  2. Note each gift's price from October, at one or two retailers, with the date.
  3. Set a target price for each gift, based on its usual price or its history.
  4. Stay focused: only watch the products on your list, not the "deals of the day".
  5. Buy as soon as the target is reached, after checking the return policy.
  6. Set a cut-off date in early December: after that, buy at the best available price so it arrives in time.

Doing steps 2 to 5 by hand for fifteen or so gifts means reopening dozens of product pages every week, and drops that last only a few hours slip by unnoticed.

Put it into practice: your gift list on autopilot in 3 steps

UniverTrack automates the tracking: you paste each gift's link (Amazon with its price history, Cdiscount, and other online stores on a best-effort basis), the price is checked regularly and you get an email at the right moment.

  1. Paste the link of each gift on your list into UniverTrack.
  2. Set a target price for each one, using the price history and the "good time to buy" indicator.
  3. Get the alert and buy when the price is reached, in October, on Black Friday or in December.

For a family gift list, the Malin plan fits best: up to 50 tracked products, fake-discount detection and an AI buying assistant to help you choose between two gifts. If you are comparing the same toy or gadget across several retailers, the Pro plan groups those offers on a single product page. All plans are on the pricing page and start with a 14-day free trial, no commitment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to buy Christmas gifts?
November usually has the most offers, with Black Friday on November 27, 2026 and Cyber Monday on the 30th. October is ideal for building your list and noting reference prices.
Is October too early to buy Christmas presents?
Not if the price hits your target. Just check the return policy: the legal 14-day withdrawal period for online purchases can expire before Christmas unless the retailer extends it.
Do toy prices go up before Christmas?
It depends on the item. Highly sought-after toys can become scarce in December and remaining offers pricier; tracking prices from the autumn lets you see it product by product.
Can I return a gift bought on Black Friday?
Yes for an online purchase, within the legal 14-day withdrawal period, with some exceptions such as personalised items. Some retailers extend that period for holiday-season orders.
Is Singles Day worth it for Christmas shopping?
It can be, especially on the platforms that promote it, but factor in delivery times from abroad and return conditions. Our Singles Day 2026 guide covers what to watch.
How do I get notified when a gift drops in price?
Set an alert with a target price on each product, and you will get an email when it is reached. Our price drop alert guide explains how.
