When to buy an e-bike for less: a month-by-month guide

The best time to buy an e-bike is usually at the end of the season, from autumn into mid-winter, when demand drops and retailers clear the current model year to make room for new bikes. Black Friday and the January sales often add discounts on that leftover stock. Spring is the opposite: demand peaks, so it's rarely the best moment to find a deal.

An electric bike is a big purchase. This guide explains how seasonality affects prices, where purchase subsidies stand in France in 2026, and what to check before paying, whether you buy new or used.

Why e-bike prices change with the seasons

Cycling is a highly seasonal market, and three forces drive most price movements:

• Demand: it rises as soon as the weather improves and people start thinking about commuting or weekend rides. Sellers have little reason to cut prices, and popular sizes can sell out.
• Model years: like car makers, bike brands refresh their ranges every year. New models are often announced between summer and autumn, so shops need to move the current year's stock.
• Sales events: Black Friday, winter and summer sales, back-to-school promotions. E-bikes show up more and more in these events, especially at large retailers and on marketplaces.

The upshot: the very same bike can cost noticeably less in November than in April, just because it has become "last year's model".

What month is best to buy an e-bike?

The table below sums up the patterns typically seen. These are qualitative trends, not guarantees: every brand and shop has its own pricing policy, which is why tracking the exact model you want matters.

Is last year's e-bike model worth buying?

From one year to the next, changes to a given model are often modest: a new colour, a different display, sometimes a slightly larger battery. A previous-year bike sold new by a retailer carries the same statutory rights as the latest version.

What to compare between model years

• Battery capacity (in Wh): the main factor behind range.
• The motor: its generation, position (hub or mid-drive) and torque.
• Parts compatibility: will a replacement battery still be available in a few years?

If the differences are minor, the clearance model is usually the smart choice. The catch: the most common frame sizes go first, so don't wait too long once prices start falling.

Are Black Friday e-bike deals real?

Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November 2026, right in the middle of clearance season, which can make for a good combination. It's also peak season for inflated "was" prices. Before buying, make sure the discount is based on a price the seller actually charged. Is there still an e-bike subsidy in France in 2026?

Many articles online are out of date on this. France's national bike bonus ("bonus vélo") and the scrappage premium for bikes were abolished by decree no. 2024-1084 of 29 November 2024: they no longer apply to bikes invoiced after 14 February 2025. There is therefore no longer a state "prime vélo" for buying a new e-bike.

Other schemes may still be available:

• Local subsidies: some towns, metropolitan areas, departments or regions run their own schemes. Amounts, income conditions and eligible bikes vary widely, and some schemes open and close during the year.
• The sustainable mobility allowance ("forfait mobilités durables"): employers can choose to cover part of the cost of commuting by bike, including e-bikes. It isn't a purchase grant, but it can help offset the cost over time. Ask your employer.

Check the conditions on your local authority's official website and on service-public.fr before buying. The details matter: some local schemes require you to apply within a set time after purchase, to buy from a local shop, or to provide an invoice in your name. E-bike buying checklist: battery, motor and warranty

A low price only pays off if the bike lasts. Check the following:

• Legal compliance: in France, an e-bike (pedelec) must only assist while you pedal, have a motor with a maximum continuous rated power of 250 W, and cut assistance at 25 km/h. Beyond that, it no longer counts as an electrically assisted bicycle under the Highway Code.
• The battery: capacity in Wh, price and availability of a spare, included charger, and whether it can be removed for charging indoors.
• The manufacturer's warranty: brands often offer different terms for the frame, the motor and the battery. Read the details, not just the headline figure.
• Statutory conformity guarantee: when you buy from a business in France, it applies for two years, on top of any commercial warranty.
• After-sales service: a nearby dealer who can service and diagnose the electrical system is often worth a small price difference.
• Frame marking: in France, bikes sold by a business must carry a unique ID registered in a national database, which helps if the bike is stolen.

New or used e-bike: which is better value?

Buying used can lower the bill, but the battery is the weak point: it wears with age and charge cycles, and replacing it is expensive.

Buying used from a shop

You're covered by the statutory conformity guarantee: for 12 months, a defect is presumed to have existed at the time of sale. Ask whether the battery and motor have been diagnosed.

Buying used from a private seller

Only the hidden-defects guarantee applies, and it's harder to enforce. Ask for the original invoice, check the bike's ID, test-ride it with a charged battery, and steer clear of a "derestricted" bike: it's no longer compliant and can cause problems after an accident. A suspiciously low price can also be a sign of a stolen bike.

Often, a new previous-year model bought at the end of the season is the best compromise: a lower price, a fresh battery and full guarantees.
