AI shopping assistant: what AI can (and can't) do to help you choose a product

Updated : · 5 min read

An AI shopping assistant is a conversational tool that helps you choose a product: you describe what you need and your budget, and it frames the problem, explains the trade-offs and suggests options. Used well, it saves a lot of time narrowing things down. But AI can get things wrong, so always check the specs and the price on the retailer's product page before you buy.

What is an AI shopping assistant?

It's a chatbot focused on purchase decisions. It runs on a language model that understands a request written in everyday language ("a reliable drill for occasional DIY") and answers in a structured way. The better assistants don't just produce text: they rely on data, such as a database of products and prices, to ground their recommendations in something you can check.

How is that different from a search engine or a price comparison site? You don't need to know the right keywords or which specs matter: the assistant helps you work that out.

What AI can do to help you choose a product

  • Clarify your needs: area to cover, how often you'll use it, space or noise constraints.
  • Turn needs into criteria: power, battery life, capacity, motor type, and which of them really matter to you.
  • Explain trade-offs: petrol or battery, entry-level or longer-lasting, price or versatility.
  • Stick to a budget: rule out what's too expensive and flag when the budget is too tight for the use you describe.
  • Suggest products to compare, when it has data on them.
  • Break a tie between two shortlisted models: set out, point by point, what separates them for your particular use, so you can decide whether the pricier one is worth the difference.

In short, it does the groundwork a knowledgeable friend or a good shop assistant would: asking the right questions before you look at a single product page.

What AI can't do (and you should know)

An honest shopping assistant should be clear about its limits. The main ones:

  • It can be wrong: a language model can mix up two models or state an incorrect spec with confidence. Always check the spec sheet on the retailer's or manufacturer's site.
  • It doesn't see the whole market: its suggestions depend on the data it can access. A product missing from its database won't be suggested, however good it is.
  • It can't replace trying a product: comfort, perceived noise and handling remain subjective.
  • It doesn't know if now is the right time: without price history, AI can't tell you whether today's price is low or inflated. That's the job of price tracking (see the best time to buy).

A simple rule: AI helps you choose, price history helps you pay the right price. The two work together.

How to write a good request for an AI assistant

The more precise your request, the more useful the answer. Include at least:

  1. The type of product and its main use.
  2. The context: area, frequency, number of people, pets, constraints.
  3. Your maximum budget, in euros.
  4. What matters most to you: durability, quietness, weight, price.

Examples of effective requests: "Petrol brush cutter for 2,000 m², budget €250", or "Powerful cordless vacuum for pet hair, max €300". For that last one, our guide on when to buy a cordless vacuum will then help you pick the right time to buy.

How UniverTrack's shopping assistant works

UniverTrack's assistant sits in your account, right next to price tracking. It runs on an AI model from Anthropic (Claude).

1. You describe your needs and budget

Write as you would to a shop assistant. It replies in the language of your messages (French, English, Italian, Spanish or German), concisely and without jargon, explaining the trade-offs between price, quality and use.

2. It searches products that are actually tracked

To make recommendations, the assistant queries the database of products tracked in UniverTrack, with their current best price. It's set up never to invent reviews, ratings or prices. When no relevant product is in the database, it says so, gives general buying criteria and invites you to paste a product link to track it.

3. You track the product in one click

Suggested products come with a "Track" button. One click and the product joins your dashboard: its price is checked automatically, the history builds up and the "good time to buy" indicator puts the price in context. Already know which product you want? Skip the assistant and paste its link straight into your dashboard: our guide to price tracking apps walks through that route step by step.

4. You get alerted at the right time

Set a target price on the product page: you get an email as soon as it's reached and the product is in stock. See our price drop alert guide to pick a realistic threshold. From the Smart plan up, the product page also flags inflated "was" prices (see the fake discount detector).

How many AI assistant messages does each plan include?

The assistant is available during the free trial and your subscription. Each message you send counts towards a monthly quota that resets on the 1st of every month; a single message can be up to 2,000 characters.

PlanMonthly priceAI messages per monthTracked products
Smart€6.99200Up to 50
Pro€12.99500Up to 200
Expert€19.991,000Unlimited

The Starter plan (€3.99) focuses on price tracking: history, indicator and alerts for 10 products. If help choosing products matters to you, go for Smart or above. When you reach your quota, the assistant tells you; price tracking and alerts keep working as usual.

Your data and the assistant: the essentials

  • Your conversations are saved in your account so the assistant can follow the thread.
  • Messages are processed by Anthropic, the AI assistant's subprocessor, as stated in the site's privacy policy. Some data may be processed outside the European Union, in line with the GDPR (standard contractual clauses).
  • You can delete your account and your data from the Account area.
  • The site only uses strictly necessary cookies, with no advertising tracking.

A good habit with any assistant: don't share personal information that isn't needed for your product search.

Put it into practice: from question to buying at the right price

  1. Describe your needs to the assistant, or paste the link of a product you already have in mind.
  2. Track the product you pick and set a target price based on its history.
  3. Get the email alert, check the specs at the retailer, then buy.

For help choosing products and avoiding fake discounts, the Smart plan is the best fit (200 messages a month). If you often compare several retailers or have lots of questions, Pro gives you 500 messages and multi-retailer comparison. Everything is on the pricing page, and you can start your 14-day free trial with no commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Can you trust an AI's product recommendations?
As a starting point, yes, but not blindly: AI can get a spec or a model number wrong. Always check the spec sheet and the price at the retailer before buying.
Does UniverTrack's assistant know every product on the market?
No. It bases its recommendations on products tracked in UniverTrack. If it finds nothing relevant, it says so, gives buying criteria and invites you to paste a product link to track it.
What happens when I reach my message quota?
The assistant tells you the monthly quota has been reached; it resets on the 1st of the following month, or you can upgrade. Price tracking and alerts aren't affected.
Can the assistant tell me if now is a good time to buy?
That's what price tracking is for: once a product is tracked, the "good time to buy" indicator compares the current price with its observed history and tells you when there isn't enough data yet.
Which languages can I use with the assistant?
It replies in the language of your messages: French, English, Italian, Spanish or German.
Can I try the assistant before paying?
Yes, the assistant is available during the 14-day free trial, with the quota of the plan you chose. The trial requires a payment method, and you can cancel from the Account area.
