Is a price tracking subscription worth it? The maths, with examples

Updated : · 5 min read

A price tracking subscription pays for itself as soon as the price drops it helps you catch exceed what it costs. With UniverTrack's Découverte plan, that cost is €3.99 a month, which is €47.88 over a year on monthly billing, or €39.90 on annual billing. In other words, a single drop of a few tens of euros on a significant purchase can be enough to cover it. Conversely, if you rarely buy and spend little, it probably won't pay off, and that is just as useful to know.

Here are the maths, worked (hypothetical) examples, the right plan for each type of shopper, and how to stop if it isn't helping you.

How much does UniverTrack cost per month and per year?

Prices as shown on the pricing page at the time of this update. Annual billing gives you 2 months free compared with monthly billing.

PlanMonthly price12 months paid monthlyAnnual billingPer monthTracked products
Découverte€3.99€47.88€39.90€3.33Up to 10
Malin€6.99€83.88€69.90€5.83Up to 50
Pro€12.99€155.88€129.90€10.83Up to 200
Expert€19.99€239.88€199.90€16.66Unlimited

Every plan includes price history, the "good time to buy" indicator and email alerts. Malin adds fake-discount detection and an AI buying assistant (200 messages a month); Pro adds multi-retailer comparison and Amazon prices by country; Expert adds unlimited products and back-in-stock alerts.

How do you work out whether a price tracker subscription pays off?

The formula fits on one line:

Worth it if: (price you would have paid without tracking − price you actually paid) > subscription cost over the period.

The trap is counting too generously. To stay honest with yourself:

  • only count purchases you would have made anyway;
  • compare with the price you would actually have paid (usually the price on the day you decided), not the struck-through price;
  • count the cost over the real subscription period: two months around one purchase, or a full year.

What the maths leaves out

Some gains are hard to put a number on: the time you no longer spend rechecking product pages, and above all the purchase you skip because the "deal" was really the usual price. We'd rather not turn those into euros: treat them as a bonus, not as the main justification.

Worked examples: when the subscription pays for itself

The examples below are hypothetical illustrations, not observed results or promises: the size of any drop depends entirely on the product, the retailer and the timing.

Hypothetical exampleSubscription costAssumed savingResult
A €700 TV, tracked for 2 months before Black Friday, bought at €630Découverte, 2 months monthly: €7.98€70+€62.02
A household tracking about ten purchases a year that catches three €25 dropsMalin, annual: €69.90€75+€5.10, only just worth it
A regular shopper who catches two €20 drops over the yearDécouverte, annual: €39.90€40+€0.10, break-even
€60 earbuds bought at €54Découverte, 1 month: €3.99€6+€2.01, hardly worth it
The price doesn't drop while you track itDécouverte, 1 month: €3.99€0−€3.99 (€0 if you cancel during the trial)

What these examples show

  • The pricier the product, the better the maths: a modest percentage drop quickly means tens of euros on a TV or a large appliance (see when to buy a TV).
  • Paying monthly around one specific purchase costs very little, as long as you start tracking a few weeks ahead.
  • On small amounts, a subscription only makes sense if you track several products at the same time.

When is a price tracking subscription not worth it?

Let's be frank: a subscription won't do much for you if:

  • you make one or two small online purchases a year;
  • you always buy on impulse and can't wait;
  • you only shop on Amazon and a free alert is enough: our guide to free vs paid price trackers covers those options;
  • alerts might tempt you into buying things you didn't need: a pointless "bargain" is still money spent.

UniverTrack review: what to know before you subscribe

You won't find testimonials or a five-star rating here: we'd rather describe exactly what the tool does and let you judge it on a real trial.

  • What UniverTrack does: you paste a product link (Amazon, Cdiscount or another online store, as long as the product page can be read); the price is checked automatically, a dated history builds up and you get an email when your target price is reached.
  • Price history starts on the day you begin tracking, except on Amazon, where past history can be shown.
  • What it doesn't do: it doesn't automatically search every shop for a product, and it has no official integration with Fnac, Darty or Boulanger. Multi-retailer comparison (Pro) groups the links for the same product that you add from each retailer.
  • Fake discounts: detection (from Malin upwards) uses price history to flag a misleading discount. More in our guide to the fake discount detector.

Which plan should you choose?

Your profileSuggested planWhy
One big planned purchase (TV, washing machine, laptop)Découverte, monthlyUp to 10 products: plenty for one purchase and a few alternatives
Deal hunter who distrusts struck-through pricesMalinUp to 50 products, fake-discount detection, AI assistant
You compare the same product at several retailers, or across European Amazon storesProMulti-retailer grouping with the best offer, Amazon prices by country
A very large number of products, need for back-in-stock alertsExpertUnlimited products, all alerts, priority support

If in doubt, start with the smallest plan that covers your needs: there is no commitment, so nothing locks you in if it doesn't suit you.

Monthly or annual billing: which is cheaper?

Over a full year, annual billing costs less: €39.90 instead of €47.88 for Découverte, a €7.98 difference, and €13.98 for Malin (€69.90 instead of €83.88). But it only pays off if you genuinely use the tool all year.

  • Go monthly if you track prices around occasional purchases: start tracking a few weeks ahead (for example before Black Friday 2026), then cancel once you've bought.
  • Go annual if you always keep a list of products to watch and know you'll stay subscribed for at least ten months.

How do you cancel a UniverTrack subscription?

There is no commitment. To stop:

  1. log in and open your Account page;
  2. click "Manage my subscription", which opens the secure billing portal;
  3. cancel: cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.

During the 14-day free trial, a payment method is requested, but if you cancel before the trial ends, the paid subscription is not activated. It's the simplest way to test the maths on your own purchase without paying anything.

Put it into practice: test the maths on your next purchase

  1. Paste the link of the product you plan to buy.
  2. Set a target price: the price at which this purchase becomes a genuine deal for you.
  3. Get the email alert and buy at the right time. Note the difference from the starting price: that's your break-even calculation. To fine-tune your alerts, see our price drop alert guide.

For one significant purchase, pick Découverte; to hunt deals across many products and avoid fake discounts, Malin; to compare several retailers, Pro. Compare plans on the pricing page, then start your 14-day free trial.

Frequently asked questions

How much does UniverTrack cost per year?
On annual billing, from €39.90 (Découverte) to €199.90 (Expert). On monthly billing, from €3.99 to €19.99 a month, which is €47.88 to €239.88 over twelve months.
Is there a free version of UniverTrack?
There is no permanent free plan, but every plan starts with a 14-day free trial. You can also paste a product link on the site to see a free preview before signing up.
What is the difference between the Découverte and Malin plans?
Découverte tracks up to 10 products with price history, the good-time-to-buy indicator and email alerts. Malin goes up to 50 products and adds fake-discount detection and the AI buying assistant.
What happens to my tracked products if I cancel?
Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period, so your tracking and alerts stay active until then. After that, automatic checks and alerts are no longer provided.
Does a price tracking subscription guarantee savings?
No. The tool tells you when the price drops or hits your target, but if the price doesn't move while you track it, there is nothing to save. That's why the free trial is useful for judging it on a real purchase.
Is it worth subscribing just for Black Friday?
It can be on a significant purchase, provided you start tracking several weeks ahead to learn the usual price. One or two months of Découverte cost €3.99 to €7.98.
