When to buy a tumble dryer for less: a month-by-month guide

The best time to buy a tumble dryer is usually off-season, in spring and summer, when laundry dries outside and demand is calmer, plus the sales (January and late June in France) and Black Friday. The first cold snaps of October and November, by contrast, bring back rushed buyers, and that's when people tend to buy without comparing. Shortlist your model early and follow its price for a few weeks.

Best month to buy a tumble dryer: the calendar

This table sums up the usual seasonal patterns for tumble dryers in France and much of Europe. Treat it as qualitative guidance, not a promise: a specific model can drop outside these windows.

Why a tumble dryer is a seasonal purchase

In summer, many households hang their washing outside or on a balcony; the dryer gets less use and nobody thinks about replacing it. From autumn, days get shorter, the air gets damper, and a broken dryer quickly becomes a problem. Purchases then bunch up over a few weeks, often in a hurry, leaving little room to compare.

If your dryer is showing signs of wear (longer cycles, clothes still damp, unusual noise), plan the replacement in spring or summer. You'll have time to follow prices and catch the summer sales or a clearance deal.

What about Black Friday?

Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November 2026. Offers can be worthwhile, but they land in peak season: the only way to know whether a price is genuinely low is to compare it with what you noted in previous months. Heat pump or condenser: which tumble dryer should you buy?

What changed on 1 July 2025

Since 1 July 2025, new EU ecodesign rules (Regulation (EU) 2023/2533) set efficiency requirements that only heat pump dryers meet. According to the European Commission, only these models can now be placed on the EU market. Resistance-heated condenser or vented dryers placed on the market before that date may still turn up as leftover stock, so check the technology on the product page.

The three technologies

For a new appliance, then, the real question is picking the right heat pump model, not choosing between technologies. France's national consumer institute (INC) points out that heat pump dryers use far less electricity than resistance or vented models, which is what makes the higher purchase price pay off over time.

What to look for in a tumble dryer

• Capacity (kg): at least matching your washing machine, so you can dry a full load in one go.
• Location: heat pump dryers work best in a temperate room. In a cold garage or basement, check the ambient temperature range given by the manufacturer.
• Water drainage: a tank to empty, or a direct drain connection that's easier day to day.
• Stacking: to put it on top of your washer, you need a stacking kit compatible with both machines.
• Moisture sensor: stops the cycle when clothes are dry, protecting fabrics and saving energy.
• Noise: shown as a class on the energy label, important in a flat.
• Maintenance: easy-access filters, self-cleaning condenser or not.

How to read the new tumble dryer energy label

Since 1 July 2025, the EU energy label for tumble dryers uses an A to G scale (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2534), replacing the old A+++ to D scale. A dryer once rated A+++ may now show a lower letter: it's the scale that changed.

The new label shows:

• energy consumption per 100 cycles (kWh, weighted between full and half load);
• rated capacity in kg;
• the eco programme duration at full load;
• the condensation efficiency class, which tells you how much moisture is captured rather than released into the room;
• the noise class.

To compare two models, rely on kWh per 100 cycles rather than the letter alone.

The true cost of a tumble dryer: purchase, energy and upkeep

A tumble dryer is one of the hungrier laundry appliances when it runs often. To compare, work out: kWh per 100 cycles ÷ 100 × cycles per year × your price per kWh × years of use. If you mostly use it in winter, base the number of cycles on your real habits.

Hypothetical example: between an entry-level model and a slightly pricier but more efficient one, run this calculation with your own electricity tariff; the purchase gap may pay for itself within a few years, or not, depending on how often you dry.

Add delivery, any stacking kit and set-up. In France and across the EU, a two-year legal guarantee of conformity applies anyway and online purchases generally come with a 14-day right of withdrawal. In France, the seller must also take back your old appliance for free when you buy an equivalent new one (the "one-for-one" rule); other EU countries have similar schemes.

1. Measure the space (stacked or side by side) and check the room's ventilation.
2. Choose a capacity at least equal to your washing machine's.
3. Go for a heat pump model and confirm the technology on the listing.
4. Compare kWh per 100 cycles, condensation class and noise class.
5. Plan for a stacking kit or drain connection if needed.
6. Note the exact model and start tracking its price in spring or summer.
7. Compare the delivered price, including take-back of your old dryer.
