When to buy an electric scooter for less: calendar and 2026 French rules

The best time to buy an electric scooter is usually at the end of the season, from autumn until the end of the January sales: demand falls as the weather turns cold and retailers clear the year's models, especially around Black Friday. Spring and early summer are the opposite, with peak demand and fewer discounts. Before chasing a deal, also make sure the model complies with French rules, or the saving can quickly turn into a cost.

Why e-scooter prices change with the seasons

E-scooters follow much the same pattern as bikes: people buy them when the weather is good. Three forces drive prices:

• Weather and demand: as soon as spring arrives, many people start thinking about scooting to work. Sellers have little reason to cut prices.
• Range updates: brands regularly release new versions. The outgoing model, often very similar, then gets cleared.
• Sales events: Black Friday, the holidays, winter and summer sales. Scooters feature heavily, especially at large retailers and on marketplaces.

Two demand peaks are worth planning around: back-to-school season, when people rethink their daily commute, and Christmas, when scooters are a popular gift, including for teenagers.

What month is best to buy an electric scooter?

These are qualitative trends: every brand and retailer has its own pricing policy. Treat them as a direction, not a guarantee.

Black Friday, Christmas, January sales: real deals?

Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November 2026, followed by Cyber Monday on 30 November. It lands in the middle of clearance season, which can produce good offers. It's also when inflated "was" prices multiply.

In France, the reference price for an announced discount must be the lowest price the seller charged in the previous 30 days (article L112-1-1 of the Consumer Code, from the EU Omnibus directive). If the scooter is a gift, buying around Black Friday rather than mid-December avoids paying when demand is highest. Electric scooter rules in France in 2026

In France, an e-scooter is a powered personal mobility device (EDPM). A bargain on a non-compliant model, or one unsuitable for its rider, isn't a bargain. If you live elsewhere, check your own country's rules, which can differ a lot.

Minimum age and speed

• 14 years minimum to ride an e-scooter or other EDPM, since 1 September 2023 (up from 12). Worth remembering when buying a gift.
• 25 km/h maximum by design. Riding a device whose design speed exceeds that limit can lead to a fine of up to €1,500. Some models sold online go faster: they can't be used on public roads.

Mandatory insurance

Third-party liability insurance is mandatory: it covers damage you cause to others. Your home insurance won't necessarily cover an e-scooter, so ask your insurer before buying and include the cost in your budget.

Equipment and where you can ride

• The scooter must have front and rear lights, reflectors, a braking system and a horn or bell.
• Outside built-up areas, where riding is allowed, a helmet is mandatory; some prefects also require one locally. It's strongly advised everywhere. At night or in poor visibility, reflective gear is required.
• No passengers, no earphones, and no riding on pavements unless you walk the scooter.

What to compare before buying

To compare two prices, you need two genuinely comparable products:

• Battery: capacity in Wh largely determines range. Advertised range is often measured in favourable conditions, so allow a margin for rider weight, hills and cold weather.
• Weight: crucial if you carry it up stairs or onto public transport.
• Tyres: solid (puncture-proof but harsher) or pneumatic (more comfortable, need maintenance).
• Brakes: type and number, mechanical or electric.
• Water resistance: the IP rating given by the manufacturer, and what the warranty excludes in the rain.
• Spare parts: battery, tyres, brakes. A scooter without available parts ends up in the bin at the first fault.

New, end-of-line or used?

A new end-of-line model is often the best compromise: a lower price, a fresh battery and, in France, the two-year legal guarantee of conformity when you buy from a business. Compare spec sheets: if the new version only changes a detail, the older one will do.

A used scooter can cut the bill, but batteries wear with age and charge cycles. Between private individuals, only the hidden-defects guarantee applies. Avoid "derestricted" scooters: they're no longer compliant and can cause insurance problems after an accident.

Tracking prices by hand: the real cost

To benefit from end-of-season drops, you need to know a model's usual price and spot when it genuinely falls. By hand, that means revisiting several sites for weeks, noting prices somewhere and hoping not to miss a drop that lasts a few days.
