When to buy a mattress for less: the best times and the traps

The best time to buy a mattress in France is usually during the winter sales (January), the summer sales (late June) and around Black Friday (late November). But with bedding, the calendar isn't enough: many brands show "discounts" almost all year round. So the real question isn't only "when?" but "is this price actually lower than usual?". This guide helps you answer both.

These trends are qualitative: every retailer and online brand has its own pricing policy.

Sales and Black Friday: when discounts are real

French sales are regulated: they take place on dates set nationally (with some local exceptions) and allow retailers to sell existing stock at a loss. The 2027 winter sales run from 6 January to 2 February 2027, except in a few départements; dates and details are in our winter sales 2027 guide. It's often when display models and discontinued lines see the biggest markdowns.

Black Friday, on the other hand, isn't a regulated sales period: it's a marketing event. It falls on Friday 27 November 2026, followed by Cyber Monday on 30 November. Bedding is everywhere, with the best and the worst offers.

The permanent-discount trap in bedding

This is the hallmark of the mattress market: with some sellers, the mattress seems always on sale. The "was" price never moves, the percentage changes from week to week, and a countdown timer suggests the offer is about to end. If the "discounted" price is actually the price charged most of the time, it isn't a discount at all.

What the law says

Since 28 May 2022, when a seller in France announces a price reduction, the reference price must be the lowest price it charged in the 30 days before the reduction (article L112-1-1 of the Consumer Code, from the EU Omnibus directive). A crossed-out price that was never really charged is therefore a problem. How to protect yourself

• Ignore the percentage and look only at the price you pay, delivery included.
• Record the price over several weeks: if the "sale" price never goes back up, it's the normal price.
• Be wary of countdown timers that reset.
• Compare identical sizes: discounts often vary from one size to another.

Trial nights: how to read the small print

Many brands, especially online, offer an at-home trial period. It's a real plus for a product you can't judge in a few minutes, but the terms vary widely between sellers. Before buying, check:

• the minimum period before you can request a return: some offers require you to sleep on it for a while so your body can adjust;
• return or collection costs: free, flat-rate or paid by you;
• the form of refund: full refund, store credit, or exchange for another model only;
• condition requirements: use of a mattress protector, no stains;
• excluded sizes and models, and whether discounted purchases are left out of the offer.

A trial period is a commercial guarantee: it comes on top of your legal rights, it doesn't replace them.

Buying a mattress online: can you return it once unwrapped?

For distance purchases in the EU, you generally have a 14-day right of withdrawal. Some sellers refuse to take back a mattress once its protective film has been removed, citing the exception for sealed goods that can't be returned for hygiene reasons.

The Court of Justice of the European Union settled this in a ruling of 27 March 2019 (case C-681/17): that exception doesn't apply to a mattress just because its film was removed, since it can be cleaned and resold. However, the consumer can be held liable for any loss in value if they handled it beyond what was needed to examine it, and return costs may be theirs if the seller said so. In practice: inspect the mattress carefully, without treating it as already yours, until you're sure you'll keep it.

Eco-fee and taking back your old mattress

In France, a new mattress includes an eco-participation fee in its price: it funds the collection and recycling of used furniture and bedding through the approved body Ecomaison. It's included in the price with tax. To compare two offers, compare total prices, eco-fee and delivery included.

Since 2022, furniture and bedding sellers in France are in principle required to take back your old equivalent item for free when you buy a new one ("one for one"), in store depending on the shop's floor space, or at delivery depending on the retailer's size. Ask for it when you order: it's often easier than finding your own way to dispose of an old mattress. Outside France, check local take-back and recycling schemes.

Choose the right mattress before watching prices

A good price on the wrong mattress is still a bad deal. Before you start tracking:

1. Fix the dimensions based on your bed frame and base.
2. Pick the type of filling (pocket springs, foam, latex, hybrid) and firmness to suit your sleeping position and build.
3. Check compatibility with your base: a new mattress on a worn-out base loses part of its benefit.
4. Read the warranties: in France, the two-year legal guarantee of conformity applies when buying from a business; the commercial warranty usually specifies what's covered (sagging, deformation) and under what conditions.
5. Shortlist two or three models, then track their prices.
