Best price comparison site in France: which one to use?

There is no single "best price comparison site": in France, idealo and leDénicheur are the most complete for shoppers because they add price history and price alerts to the retailer comparison. Google Shopping is the fastest for a first look, and Kelkoo remains a long-standing general comparator. But a comparison site answers "who is cheapest today?", not "is now a good time to buy?". For a purchase that can wait, a price tracker is often more useful.

How does a price comparison site work?

A comparator collects catalogues and prices from partner retailers and shows them side by side on one product page. Most earn money from those retailers (per click or per sale). That doesn't make them less useful, but it explains two things: not every retailer is listed, and the display order isn't always based on price alone.

Also watch out: the price shown isn't necessarily the price you pay. Depending on the settings, delivery costs may be excluded, and a third-party marketplace seller may not offer the same returns or warranty terms as the retailer itself.

idealo or leDénicheur: which should you pick?

Both handle the basics very well, and nothing stops you from using both on the same product.

• idealo is convenient if you want to see lots of offers at once, set a target price including delivery and get a notification in the app.
• leDénicheur stands out for its flexible alerts (every drop, threshold, back in stock) and its lowest-price chart over time. Note that if your product is mostly sold on Amazon, its history won't reflect that retailer.

What are Google Shopping and Kelkoo good for?

Google Shopping (Google's Shopping tab) is unbeatable for a first scan: type the product name and you instantly see a large number of offers. However, according to Google's official help pages, the price tracking features in Google Search and Chrome are offered in Australia, Canada, the United States, India and Japan, not in France. For history and alerts on French shops, you need another tool.

Kelkoo is one of Europe's oldest comparison services. It is still useful for cross-checking results and discovering lesser-known retailers, but it won't tell you whether a price is low compared with its past.

Price comparison vs price tracking: what's the difference?

A comparator looks across space (many retailers, right now). A price tracker looks across time (one product, over several weeks). They answer different questions.

The key point: today's lowest price can still be high compared with last month. Around big sales events, some prices go up before being "discounted". The real cost of comparing by hand

Comparing once is quick. Comparing every other day for a month, across three or four products and several sites, is not. In practice people give up, then miss the drop that lands on a Tuesday evening, or buy during a "deal" that was really the usual price.
